This combo course addresses the skills and knowledge for personnel responsible for traffic management on a site to implement a work zone traffic management plan in the immediate vicinity of a workplace. The course also addresses the skills and knowledge for those responsible for stopping and starting traffic in temporary traffic management using a stop slow bat or boom gate.

Target Audience
Course requirements:
Learners are required to:- Be 18 years of age or over
- Have Language‚ Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills to ACSF level 2 or above
- Bring your own PPE (including steel capped boots, long pants and high visibility shirt/ vest/ jacket).
- Provide 100 points Evidence of Indentity (EOI) - you are required to bring original ID documents on the training day (click here to see EOI requirements in your State).
- You'll not be allowed to participate in the training if you do not bring the IDs.
If you are keen to work as a Traffic Controller in NSW it is also highly recommended that you have a White Card and hold a provisional or open drivers licence as you will be required to travel to work sites and may be required to drive work vehicles.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify safety implications of traffic control at road works and personal responsibilities
- Set up, monitor and close down traffic control devices according to a nominated TGS/TMP, to WHS and legislative requirements
- Operate a two-way radio correctly and effectively
- Check, clean and store equipment on completion of work and close down a TGS/TMP
- Select a TCP to suit site conditions, traffic volumes and work activities, and adjust to suit the specific road environment
- Know the basic function of the TGS/TMP system
- Adapt to all work health and safety (WHS) and operational requirements
- Use the site/location assessment, distinguish topographical landmarks and carry out authorised risk control
- Conduct an onsite check of a TGS/TMP to identify any unexpected risks/hazards
- Plan for emergencies that may arise
- Ensure spacing between signs and traffic control devices is in line with a TGS/TMP
- Understand speed, environment, type and class of vehicles, traffic density, sight lines, environmental conditions, weather patterns and surface type
- Maintain traffic incident reports
- Monitor traffic controllers
- Stop/direct road users using a stop/slow bat and understand stopping sight distances
- Maintain traffic incident reports
- Understand the Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs) also known as Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) for the site
- Assess and respond to changes in the environment, for example traffic volumes, weather conditions, road conditions, Work Health and Safety (WHS) and operational requirements
- Carry out risk assessments for personal safety
- Participate in toolbox talks (specific to traffic control)
- Use communication methods and devices
- Conform to traffic control policy and procedures

This course is delivered and assessed over 3-days and includes the following:

- Minimum practical implementation using full scale devices and vehicles in controlled and safe environments

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to operate a truck or trailer mounted attenuator when carrying out traffic management.
This course is aimed at current or new TMA operators looking to formalise and deepen their skills and knowledge in TMA operations.

Target Audience
Course requirements:
Learners are required to:- Be 18 years of age or over
- Have Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills to ACSF level 2 or above
- Hold Implement Traffic Control Plans accreditation and RMS card
- Hold a current and valid heavy vehicle licence of a suitable class to operate the TMA i.e. MR licence or above
- Hold a current white card (CPCWHS1001 or equivalent)
- Bring your own PPE including (steel capped boots, long pants and high visibility shirt / vest / jacket).
- Provide 100 points Evidence of Identity (EOI) - you are required to bring original ID documents on the training day (click here to see EOI requirements in your State).
- You'll not be allowed to participate in the training if you do not bring the IDs.

Learning Methods
This course is delivered face to face in the classroom, over one day with a maximum of 5 participants in each course. The course includes powerpoint presentations, group activities, demonstrations, videos, written assessment activities and both simulated and live practicals.
During the course learners will have the opportunity to practice their new skills in a TMA and will be required to demonstrate competency via assessment of operating a TMA on live roads.
